The Children's Room Center for Grieving Children and Teenagers
When death hits a family, the needs and resources of children are very different from those of adults who, with generally more mature support structures, find ways to carry on with help from their friends and institutions around them. Children generally have less adequately developed support-structures; they process the experience more slowly and need help they often cannot get from grieving adults closest to them; the result is long-term post-traumatic distress. TCR was established in 1991 in Waltham, as a free service of Hospice West. Modeled on an earlier program in Oregon, its purpose was to bring expertise to special needs of children grieving over the death of a family member. As word spread, demand increased; in 1996 TCR was incorporated, and their client base tripled. In 2003 a full-time Executive Director was hired, and a second office opened in Framingham. The next year a grant from the Boston Bruins Wives provided a down payment for an Arlington office; support from the MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation and the Smith Family Foundation, and a growing donor base, have stabilized the organization for future growth. Perhaps this is a new field in the making, and you can help it grow.
