The Community Family
The Community Family was founded in 1978 by a group of families in need and a few elder-care professionals, who thought they might experiment with forms of adult day-care, as a significantly lower-cost alternative to residential nursing homes. Thirty years later, TCF has multiplied to three facilities (Everett 1978, Medford 1980, and Lowell 1989), has attracted the attention and support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and is nationally recognized as a leading model in its field, especially for dementia-specific (e.g., Alzheimer’s) therapeutic care and family support. Its clients are truly needy: family incomes below $25,000; assets below $2,000; 60% have Alzheimer’s disease. Studies show the day healthcare routine slows cognitive decline, reduces depression, and reduces or prevents caregiver burnout. For its long, efficient, and caring service, CF has been named as a 2006 “Champion in Action” by Citizens Bank and NECN. Two of the facilities have been modernized with successful capital campaigns — Everett will be next. This is a strategically significant model that deserves broad philanthropic support — including yours.
