Everybody Wins! Metro Boston
Everybody Wins! is a national organization, begun in 1991, today with over 7,000 volunteers, who spend a lunch hour reading one-on-one with elementary school students — often for whom English is a second language, and primarily from low-income families. What could be simpler? They call them “Power Lunches,” for obvious reasons. Our Boston version was founded in 2003 with 13 children in one school; three years later they have over 200 students in five schools, with five more schools starting the program this year. The number of participating companies has multiplied from three to 25. The readers, who are trained, are impressive: Sen. Edward Kennedy, an EWMB trustee, participates in a D.C. school; Chelsea Chief of Police reads with a child at the Hooks School. But more often they’re ordinary folks from Coldwell Banker, Mellon New England, Pfizer, and other companies, who simply enjoy and get a boost from the fun and the learning experience. Teachers report that it helps the students in many ways, with minimal disruption to classrooms and school routines. The model is easily scalable, the budget is very low, and you can very readily help.
