Mass Mentoring Partnership
Mentoring is a sure way to benefit young people in every aspect of their lives, so hundreds of youth programs in Massachusetts have mentoring programs. For every two youths matched, however, there is one on a waiting list — demand far exceeds supply. One reason is that good mentoring programs are not easy to build and maintain — special skills, expertise, and resources are required to recruit, train, and sustain the supplies of volunteer mentors. Therefore a nationwide movement arose in the early '90s, to strengthen and strategically expand mentoring programs. In 1992 Greater Boston One to One was created as part of that trend. They expanded statewide, and in 1998 became MMP — an umbrella organization today serving 125 mentoring programs. Independent research suggests that 60% of the mentoring programs in the state have benefited from MMP's training and consulting, which are based on national research-based standards for the field. MMP sponsors bi-annual networking meetings, and monthly e-bulletins disseminating research findings, good ideas, opportunities and news. To increase funds for mentoring, MMP advocates with government and negotiates grants from leading corporations and foundations. As technology favors consolidation of philanthropic fields, here is another case where investments are leveraged.
