Ellen McCurley, Executive Director

The Pendulum Project

Having worked on the ground in Africa, Suzi Peel and Ellen McCurley witnessed the dedication of grassroots groups providing food, counseling, and education for children. Mostly volunteer-based, these smaller groups often lacked the ability to access funding from larger nongovernmental agencies, despite a growing need for more resources. Back in the U.S., while at the Kennedy School of Government, Suzi and Ellen launched the Pendulum Project as a safety net, providing funding to community-based organizations (CBOs) working with children orphaned by, or vulnerable to, the AIDS pandemic. Since 2001, Pendulum has granted $122,000 to 12 CBOs working in Malawi, resulting in 8,100 children receiving support for basic needs—food, access to healthcare, shelter—and another 146 children gaining access to secondary school. Their approach is both highly effective and efficient, carried out with just 3 staffers, from donated office space, with pro bono professionals services. Your support here have a direct impact on lives of children whose future is otherwise bleak.
