Plymouth Antiquarian Society
This is straightforward historical preservation philanthropy in Massachusetts’ oldest town. PAS was founded in 1919 to preserve historic buildings and give them new life with education programs. Their first success, which created PAS, was to save and relocate the 1809 Hedge House. In repeated rescues PAS has also acquired a significant collection of American furnishings, decorative arts and textiles. Their current project is the 1677 Harlow Old Fort House, a registered state and national historic site, one of Massachusetts' few remaining 17th-century buildings. It has been used for educational tours and special events — for 71 years an annual fishcake breakfast, and since the 1920s a schoolchildren's historical performance, “The Corn Planting.” In 2003, PAS thoroughly evaluated the property, and discovered that it was on the verge of structural collapse, from excessive moisture and rotting. They closed it for major repairs, and launched a $450,000 restoration campaign for work on its foundation, framing, regrading of the entire perimeter, partial excavation of the basement to remove clay in the subsoil, and installation of a new drainage system. PAS has already raised $300,000; but they need your help to finish the job.
