Providers' Council
The relation of human services to philanthropy is not as simple as it appears in the Catalogue, because we are looking only at its philanthropy, and at charities with budgets below $3 million. In fact, most human services organizations, certainly the largest ones, are supported far more by earned income and government dollars than by private donations. Providers’ Council’s mission is “to promote a healthy, productive and diverse human service industry.” Founded in 1976, it describes itself as “the state’s largest human service trade association,” supported primarily by membership dues. So why are they in the Catalogue? First, they offer excellent services to human service organizations, providing professional training and research, reporting news and events affecting the industry, advocating for government funding, negotiating group discounts on goods and services, and networking. Second, we and they serve many of the same organizations — we 372 (out of nearly 800 charities in all fields), and they 300. Third, Providers’ is clearly reaching out to philanthropy — they applied for listing here, and we are delighted and honored to include them. We believe we can work together in promoting human services philanthropy. If you are interested, please join us.
