Science Club for Girls

Men far outnumber women in the science and technology sectors, and yet studies continually show that diversity allows for innovative thinking and creative problem solving. So how do we encourage more women to enter these fields? Science Club for Girls, founded in 1994, has an answer: it partners girls in grades K-12 — focusing on minorities and those who will be the first in their family to attend college — with women scientists who become mentors and role models, igniting excitement and enthusiasm for science among the kids. The girls get hands-on experience in labs, and participate in museum and university activities. At a higher level, the Club imparts concrete leadership skills by having girls participate in board meetings and hiring committees, and planning and writing curricula. When the girls are ready, they start their own clubs and become peer mentors — for example, middle school girls will design fun experiments for elementary-age girls. Statistics show it’s working: 83% of the girls say the Club program has positively affected their attitude toward science, and 96% plan to attend college. Having focused solely on Cambridge Public Schools, the Science Club for Girls is now dealing with expansion requests from other cities. You can become a part of their growth, while also advancing opportunities for young girls to become enchanted by science.
