David Crowley, President and Founder

Social Capital

The national decline in local civic engagement has significant implications for communities, including violence, education and overall health. Since its founding in 2002, the mission of Social Capital Inc. (SCI) has been to strengthen communities by connecting diverse individuals and organizations through civic engagement initiatives, with the larger purpose of creating a nation where individuals are strongly connected to their neighbors and play an active role in shaping the quality of life in their communities. SCI believes that such an increase in ‘social capital’ will result in communities that are safer, healthier and more vital, and works towards the realization of this vision in the communities of Dorchester and Woburn by developing programs that empower youth to develop active citizenship, forging collaborative relationships between organizations representing diverse constituencies and purposes, and helping ensure access to information required for effective civic engagement, both through technology and face-to-face forums. In the past year alone, SCI has engaged the civic participation of 1,058 Dorchester residents and 1,765 Woburn residents. Help them continue to pursue this vision.
