Springstep
As social activities at the root of community living, dance and music are windows into other societies, transcending traditional language barriers. Recognizing this, Springstep develops an appreciation of cultural diversity through its participatory performances. Since its founding in 2000 by dancer Deborah Hawkins, Springstep has offered classes and workshops celebrating over 50 cultural and artistic traditions — such as Israeli folk dancing, Andean Fusion, Appalachian step-dancing, Senegalese Afro-pop, and Chinese music — encouraging students of all ages to immerse themselves in the art and its history. In collaborations with other community organizations and dance groups, Springstep provides accessible programming, often highly subsidized, to disadvantaged families and youths. For example, it works with the Medford Family Network on the annual International Family Festival, celebrating 11 cultures through live performances and educational displays that reflect the heritage of Medford-area families. Springstep’s 15,000-square-foot facility runs year-round, 7 days a week, and the number of students who pass through its doors has doubled in the past two years. Why not get in step with them, and support this wonderful resource?
