Art in any form, is by its nature, philanthropic. Photography has a long tradition of revealing the beauty
and value of the natural world as well as documenting the realities of the human condition. Photographs of
Yellowstone in the 1870’s by William Henry Jackson helped convince a skeptical public and Congress to
perserve that area as a national park. Social reform photographers like Lewis Hine and Jacob Riis used their
images to to effect social change. Today, with the advent of digital imaging and the Internet, photography has
changed. The medium and the message are more complicated.
That said, we believe in the power of photography to promote philanthropy. We are developing a working
definition of “philanthropic photography” using a classical sensiblity with a contemporary understanding of the
medium. It is a work in progress and we invite your input as well as submission of your photographs. We are
building an archive of powerful images for use by small charities as well as ourselves.
Contributing images is a form of volunteerism and charitable giving. We should like to thank the amazing
photographers (listed below) who have all donated the use of their images for the 2007 Catalogue. Some are
nationally known, many are honored to be included, and all are extremely talented. They have, through the
Catalogue, channeled the power of their images to improve the quality of life in Massachusetts.
