Asperger's Association of New England, Inc.
Asperger’s Syndrome (AS) was first diagnosed in
1994, as a neurological condition—a high-functioning
autism characterized by above-average IQ, but
severe and sustained impairment of social interaction
and communication, executive functioning (ability
to prioritize, initiate, organize and accomplish tasks)
and ability to tolerate and integrate sensory stimuli.
AANE was founded in 1996 by a group of concerned
families and professionals, to improve the quality of
life with people with Asperger’s and related disorders.
They held a conference which attracted twice the
number of attendees expected, so the organizers
became the founding Board, and AANE was incorporated. Although a small organization—3 full-time
and 7 part-time staff, and 40 volunteers (10 with
AS)—AANE has in only ten years become established
as a leading national, authoritative clearinghouse for
information, support, education, advocacy, networking,
resources and referrals to the AS community,
including educators and other professionals who work
with this population. They have assisted over 8000
households, and provided training workshops for
professionals at many institutions in our region. As
with other autism disorders, diagnoses have soared in
the last 10 years, and support is urgently needed—you
can help.
