Duffy Health Center, Inc.
One of philanthropy’s slogans is, “When you see
something that needs doing, do it.” DHC began
in 1993, when Dr. Arthur Bickford, a physician on
Cape Cod, noticed that local homeless men and
women were unable to obtain health care, and that
their complex needs required intensive and complex
attention by professionals who would treat them
with respect as well as compassion. So he started a
one-night-a-week clinic in a closet space in Hyannis,
adjoining Barnstable County’s only emergency shelter.
From the start, his approach was holistic—addressing
each patient’s mental, spiritual, and practical, as well
as physical, needs—requiring significant involvement
with each client. Soon Dr. Bickford was joined by
other specialists; the clinic was incorporated and
licensed in 1997. Clients increased and diversified, to
include not only chronically homeless persons living
on the street or in the shelter, but others who were
temporarily, or even at risk of, homelessness owing to
domestic violence, prior incarceration, mental health
and/or addiction issues, or other conditions. Last year
2,375 clients were seen a total of 23,000 times. DHC
now operates three leased sites, but needs to enlarge
and consolidate its available space for greater efficiency
and productivity. The time is ripe now for you to join
in their success.
