Barbara Ryther, Programs Director

The Family Self-Sufficiency Center

FSSC began in 1995 as a supportive services program of the housing authority, but in 2000 became independent and broadened its focus to family self-sufficiency. Their clients are mostly immigrants, with English as a secondary language and often marginal literacy in their first; 85% are single-mothers with at least two children; many are victims of violence, substance abuse, and/or significant depression; the youth are academically at high risk. Given that, FSSC shifted to an intensive, holistic, customized, family-oriented, and sustained, support for each of the 75-100 families they serve annually. This is not a charity that is aiming at growth or “scalability”; rather, they are focused on excellence—on qualities more than quantities. Rather than just finding people jobs, FSSC helps them hold onto and advance in their jobs, as the necessary goal. Rather than simple English instruction, teaching families how to solve daily problems using English, is the necessary goal. Rather than offering families the “do’s” and “don’ts” of effective parenting, FSCC’s goal is to help parents and children have fun together, learn to deal with stress together, and learn how to work together toward shared dreams. If you agree, join them.
