Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth (MassINC)
MassINC is our Commonwealth’s think-tank, founded
in 1996 as a preferred alternative to polarizing politics—
an independent, non-partisan, evidence-based,
follow-the-facts-wherever-they lead, research and
educational institute. They epitomize philanthropy:
“private initiatives for public good, focusing on quality
of life”, focusing on issues that matter to families
in every region of the state, and publishing research
reports on major public issues that are immensely influential
in public discourse influencing public policy.
Their CommonWealth Magazine is a quarterly journal
of public policy and civic life, sent to 10,000 leaders
and policy makers; they issue periodic e-communications
to 20,000 more concerned citizens. Because they
are nonpartisan, rigorously empirical, and strategic,
they are not identified with any particular agenda.
Rather, what they do is to set contexts for civic
discourse, by identifying big-picture issues, based on
in-depth research. Among their findings: three major
demographic forces are shaping our economic future:
emigration to other states, international immigration,
and graying of the population. Of these, immigration
is most influential in shaping and sustaining our future
workforce. Messages abound here for philanthropy, so
philanthropists should support MassINC.
