DESCRIPTION:

Founded in 1992 in Maynard, AT is quite exceptional—an all-volunteer, amateur, community theatre that is nationally distinguished! They have been invited twice (2000, 2004) as one of ten top community theatres in America, to represent us at the International Theatre Festival in Nova Scotia; they have won many awards at state, regional, and national theater festivals; their Executive Director is on the national Board of the American Association of Community Theatres. Their 90-member volunteers (this is serious volunteering—up to 40 hours per week) produce both classic and contemporary works, sometimes 20 new plays every year. In 2002 they inaugurated the New Works Winter Festival (NWWF) for unpublished works by MA and then nationwide playwrights, often with first-time actors and directors, and audience discussions afterward. More than 30 of these productions have become professionally licensed or published plays, and one from 2007 is being considered for sitcom TV. All this is good for Maynard—a diverse, low-to-moderate income community—which Boston Magazine has named one of the top 25 towns in Massachusetts, “the Harvard Square of Metrowest” based partly on its year-round variety of cultural offerings. Try it—you’ll like it.
