DESCRIPTION:

Here’s another boating program, for residents of Lawrence and the Merrimack Valley. Launched in 1979 with just six boats on donated riverfront property, now at its 30th anniversary the Greater Lawrence Community Boating Program has more than 140 watercraft: sailboats, rowboats, canoes, kayaks, windsurfers, and even a rebuilt Boston Whaler. It annually serves 2000-2500 inner-city kids free of charge, and offers classes at minimal expense for those who are not income eligible. (For $50 a boy or girl gets an entire summer of lessons and unlimited usage.) What it offers above all to Lawrence youth, who might never have dreamed of operating a boat, is new experience and opportunity for growth. They can gain boating skills under staff supervision and acquire a hobby that will bring lifelong satisfaction. The staff members are mainly teens, and they make excellent role models. GLCB also provides a healthy recreational program extension for many local agencies and charities with whom it collaborates. Twice weekly, the Recreation Department sponsors outings for working families; families can go on boating picnics, take lessons, or get out on the water. “Private initiatives for public good, focusing on quality of life.”
