DESCRIPTION:

This is a phenomenal success story: Progeria is the “premature aging” genetic disorder afflicting children, who die of heart disease at an average age of 13. PRF was founded in 1999 by two doctors whose son Sam was diagnosed with the disease. Today it is the world’s only organization dedicated to discovering a cure and effective treatment for Progeria and its aging-related disorders through research, outreach and education. It provides all the resources needed to propel the research forward: a Cell & Tissue Bank of biological material for researchers; a Medical & Research Database that helps create treatments to improve patients’ quality of life; a Diagnostic Test to promote early medical intervention; Scientific Conferences to foster communication and collaboration; Research Grants; and a Public Awareness program. In 2002, a PRF collaborative research team discovered the Progeria gene! This has led to further understanding not only of Progeria, but also of heart disease and the normal aging process that affects us all. This achievement attracted NIH funding for research and workshops, and multiplied the productivity of PRF, which is now the international hub for all work in the field. All this has been accomplished with a staff of three, plus volunteers. Philanthropy to the rescue, and you can help!
