DESCRIPTION:

The arts are intrinsically philanthropic—“private initiatives for public good, focusing on quality of life”—and in Aeschylus’ words, “All the arts come from Prometheus.” It was but a small step, then, for these first-rate musicians in various prominent orchestras to found SCCMS in 2001, to enrich the local cultural and musical scene near their homes around New Bedford, one of Massachusetts’ formerly thriving industrial cities that had declined as their economies were superseded in the last century. SCCMS’ quality of musicianship is extraordinary, as has been their energetic outreach to students. Today SCCMS offers six concerts annually, preceded by lectures and demonstrations, featuring an outstanding young people’s trio of winds and string, which helps attract young audiences. They offer reduced tickets for youth, elders, disadvantaged, and a free annual family concert. Their growing audience reflects New Bedford’s multi-ethnic population, because their programming offers something of interest to everyone. They give free admission to specially designated, talented, individual students. Volunteers help out in all areas of institutional and performance support. All this creative energy succeeds—95% of their budget is from philanthropic contributions and ticket sales. You can join their excellence.
