State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
GUBERNATORIAL PROCLAMATION
Whereas, in 1621, Chief Massasoit, Supreme Sachem of the Wampanoag
Indians, traveled from Rhode Island to Plimoth, Massachusetts to
join the festivities of America's first Thanksgiving, and,
Whereas, in 1777, the Continental Congress "set apart" Thanksgiving
Day "for solemn thanksgiving and praise that with one heart and one
voice the good people may express the grateful feelings of their hearts
and consecrate themselves to the service of their divine benefactor...", and,
Whereas, the citizens of the State of Rhode Island are, in the legacy
of their ancestors, a good and generous people and should be commended for their
giving and encouraged to increase their philanthropy in partnership with government
to increase the quality of life for all our citizens;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD L. CARCIERI, GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF
RHODE ISLAND AND PROVIDENCE PLANTATIONS, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM,
November 28, 2003
as
Giving Rhode Island Day
in the State of Rhode Island and encourage all of its citizens to join me in
recognizing this very important day and participate fittingly in its observance.
In recognition whereof I hereby set my hand and caused the Seal of the
State of Rhode ISland and Providence Plantations to be hereunto affixed this
28th day of November 2003.
