DESCRIPTION:The Paul Revere House (ca.1680) and its nextdoor neighbor, the Hichborn House (ca.1711), are the oldest structures in Boston. This historic preservation and educational association was founded in 1907 to save Revere's home from demolition; it acquired the Hichborn home in 1970. Today the site attracts 230,000 visitors annually, including 16,000 school children. Outreach programs reach 2,000 more students and 25,000 adults, and the website records over 500,000 hits per month. Recent collaborations with the Institute of Contemporary Art, the Boston Landmarks Orchestra and the Brandywine Museum in Pennsylvannia allowed them to reach new audiences in new mediums. All this on a budget of $800,000, of which 70% is admission fees and sales. The professionalism is first-rate; teachers, students and families give them rave reviews, and in 1989 they received the prestigious Award of Merit for excellence in programming from the American Association for State and Local History. Of course Paul Revere was one of our "Founding Philanthropists;" his famous "midnight ride" clearly exemplifies "private initiative for public benefit, to enhance quality of life." And the tradition lives on today. You can participate in this great tradition by joining as a member or giving a generous a donation. (1999: CULTURE: Education: Informal: Historic Preservation)
